Enthusiatic Co-op Students Volunteer at Casa

By all accounts, it was a great day of volunteering!

On Thursday, August 2nd, an enthusiastic team of eleven co-op student accountants from the Vancouver office of Deloitte & Touche LLP spent a full day volunteering at Casa El Salaam.

The volunteers arrived in the morning and immediately set to work on a variety of much-needed tasks. These included: a full stripping and refinishing of the house’s front porch, some thorough maintenance of the front and back gardens, and a refit of an attic space to become a home office.

When noontime came, the volunteers broke for a communal lunch provided by Tasha Bassingthwaighte, House Coordinator at Casa El Salaam. Jenny Moss, our Coordinator of Volunteers, provided the group with an introduction to CASA Refugee Housing Project and some information about refugee claimants in Vancouver. After the meal, it was back to work for one and all!

For these co-op students, the event was their first volunteer day during their time at Deloitte & Touch LLP. Their work made a significant, lasting difference on the house, and was much appreciated by the House Coordinators, CASA Refugee Housing Project committee members, and of course the house residents. We hope they’ll be back to volunteer again in the future!

Casa El Salaam is a safe, community-oriented house in the Lower Mainland where refugee claimants can live during their first six months in Canada. It is a project of Inland Refugee Society of Vancouver. For more information, please send an email to info@casarefugeehouse.org.
