What is the living environment like in CASA House?
CASA stands for Community and Shelter Association. As our name suggests, we wish to provide our tenants with both shelter and a supportive community to ease the stress of settlement. We want to connect refugee claimants to the services they need. We would also like to create a pleasant community within the house, where residents can speak freely, feel safe, share meals and house duties, and make a positive contribution to their surroundings. Residents will be provided with both semi-private accommodations (i.e., a lockable room shared with one other resident) and common areas where they can congregate with others.

What kinds of people live in the house?
The house has space for men, women, and one family. There will likely be people of different races, genders, and religions living in the house at any given time. There will also be a coordinator living on-site to welcome residents and help the house run smoothly. CASA seeks residents who value diversity, desire to be part of a community, and show courtesy and respect toward other people.

How much is the rent?
CASA wants to make rental costs as affordable as possible. To achieve this aim, we have set rent at the shelter component of income assistance. Please see our Get Informed page for more information about current income assistance shelter rates in British Columbia .

Each resident also contributes an agreed-upon monthly payment for food. This money will go toward a large supply of groceries that can be shared by everyone in the house.

All utilities (heat, hot water, electricity, phone, and Internet) are included in the rental price.

How long can refugee claimants live in the house?
The CASA House provides short-term accommodation for refugee claimants. Residents are welcome to stay at the CASA House for up to six months.

Who is responsible for cooking and cleaning?
Cooking and cleaning will be shared by all residents. Duties will be discussed and chosen by the residents and the house coordinator during weekly meetings.

Who is eligible to live in the house?
All refugee claimants are eligible to live in the house. We regret that we cannot consider applications from (a) immigrants or (b) refugees who have been granted “Convention Refugee” or “protected person” status by the Immigration and Refugee Board.

How can I apply to live at the CASA House?
The CASA House accepts referrals through the Inland Refugee Society. If you or your client(s) wish to learn more about living in the CASA House, please contact IRS by telephone, email, or in person.

While we wish that we could accommodate all refugee claimants in need, the CASA House has limited space. If your application is refused, please know that it is not based on your own merit as a candidate, but on our space constraints. Inland Refugee Society is a very reputable provider of settlement services, and would be happy to connect you with other accommodation.
